1,2,3,4 Parents! MEDIA REVIEWS

Continuing the positive Active Parenting tradition, this warm-hearted video package keeps focused on the sheer joy of being close to a wee one who is such a miracle, while it gives ideas for protecting and teaching them to survive and thrive. Respectful of the limited time parents of young children have for leisurely perusal of parenting materials, these videos keep it simple as they address stages of child development, parenting styles and ACT (Accept child's wishes, Communicate limits, Target positive choice) approach to behavior.

- Parent's Guide to Children's Media

A set of three videos that prepares students for parenthood by exposing them to the basics of child-rearing, including discipline, self-esteem and accident proofing. Strengths: These videos are fun to watch and provide real life examples in easy-to-understand language on child development. Overall Evaluation: An excellent resource for child development and parenting classes.

Active Parenting 4th Edition MEDIA REVIEWS

Dr. Michael Popkin demonstrates how moms and dads can address the complicated issues of responsibility and discipline with young children, making positive approaches to conflict almost seem like fun. Of course, that's saying a lot (and many adults will consider it a stretch),  but having come through those years with my own youngsters, I can report that this program helped me recognize the good steps I took—and times when I could have done better. Hosted by Gerardo Davila and featuring well-acted vignettes of true-to-life interactions between parents and kids, the video shows active (authoritarian) approaches to discipline, contrasting those with the traditional concept of reward and punishment. According to Popkin, "In the long run, a stronger person inflicting pain on a smaller, weaker person may cause more harm than good to the child and the relationship." Far from offering a Pollyanna view, the dramatizations show adults and kids behaving badly before going over the same situation with different strategies (such as using effective "I" messages) that will lead to much better outcomes. A helpful guide to dealing with some of the most challenging aspects of parenting, this is highly recommended. Aud: P. (C. Block)

Active Parenting Now MEDIA REVIEWS

A newly revised version of Dr. Michael Popkin's popular seminar format series, Active Parenting Now employs vignettes designed to help parents hone their parenting skills while avoiding some of the more common stresses plaguing families today. Topics include identifying individual parenting styles, how offering choices enhances self-esteem, suggestions for non-violent discipline, communicating with children in a positive way that strengthens relationships while solving problems, avoiding backing children into corners that result in power struggles, using family meetings to implement parenting strategies as well as teach values, and the often-over-looked importance of playing with children . . .The information is current and relevant to today's families and will be a terrific help for parents from single, dual, blended, or multi-generational families. Recommended.

- L. Stevens
Video Librarian Magazine

In this helpful series, parents learn "communication and nonviolent discipline techniques" that aim to create positive changes in family dynamics. In tape one, viewers are introduced to various parenting styles and meet four culturally diverse families (blended families, single parent households, etc.) who appear in vignettes throughout the series. A problem-handling model to foster better communication is presented in session two, while the third video discusses responsibility, discipline and choices. Effective title screens, diagrams and illustrations illuminate the fourth episode, which helps parents understand and redirect negative behavior. Segment five stresses character building, courage and self-esteem, while the final title highlights family meetings. The importance of having fun with your child is emphasized throughout these useful programs that often contrast differing parenting styles in the dramatizations.

Stellar resource since its launching in 1983 . . . this excellent package of videos, leader's and parent's guides model admirably its title, actively involving parents in learning new skills and applying effective parenting strategies. In the process parents become empowered and, in turn, empower their children. Especially useful segments address fighting, which has become increasingly dangerous, and "catching" kid's improvements to encourage and reinforce good behavior.

This parenting education material can be used by anyone who is interested in helping parents successfully raise confident and responsible children, such as parent educators and social workers.

  • KIDS FIRST! ENDORSEMENT, Coalition for Quality Children's Media (2nd ed.)

PRESS RELEASE
Comprehensive Juvenile Services Receives Juvenile Program Award

The Active Parenting of Teens parent education program was selected as the Juvenile Program of the Year at the conclusion of the Arkansas Coalition for Juvenile Justice Conference in North Little Rock, Arkansas on September 13, 2007. The Active Parenting of Teens is a program offered by Comprehensive Juvenile Services in Sebastian, Crawford, and Logan Counties. Ms. Frances Morreale, Parent Instructor, has been conducting the parenting classes since 1994. The program is offered to the parents of teenage children who have entered the juvenile justice system or who are at risk of entering the juvenile justice system.

The Active Parenting of Teens is a six week curriculum which addresses the various principles and skills which are necessary to assist parents in becoming more effective in the management of their teenage children. The program encourages parents to adopt skills that are needed to resolve family conflicts and to help reduce discipline problems. Parents are taught ways to promote confidence and self-esteem, which are most vital in helping parents to address their children's turbulent years and to produce positive results. The six part curriculum includes: The Active Parent, Instilling Courage and Self-Esteem, Developing Responsibility, Winning Cooperation through Communications, the Challenge of Alcohol and Other Drugs, and Parenting and Teen Sexuality.

Since the beginning of the program, the Active Parenting of Teens has enrolled 3,970 parents into the educational program. As of date, the graduation rate is 65%. The Active Parenting of Teens is exclusively designed for the parents who will, in turn, have a positive influence on their child. In order to divert the youth from juvenile delinquency, the efforts must begin on the home front, with parental involvement and control.

In addition to the Active Parenting of Teens, Comprehensive Juvenile Services provides a variety of services for the delinquent and at- risk youth in Sebastian, Crawford, Logan, Scott, Polk, and Montgomery County. The services include casework, electronic monitoring, community services, mental health, and residential treatment. The emergency shelter, The Western Arkansas Youth Shelter, is located in Cecil, Arkansas. Comprehensive Juvenile Services is a private, non-profit youth and family service organization.

Parents on Board MEDIA REVIEWS

"Created by three educational psychologists, this terrific series gives parents the tools they need to create a home environment that fosters learning and academic success. Volume one, Preparing Your Child to Succeed, teaches parents how to set up a "school smart" home . . . and provides suggestions fro communication and building self-confidence. Volume two, Encouraging Positive Behavior, helps parents learn to give polite requests, firm directions and employ natural and logical non-violent disciplinary measures. Volume three, Reinforcing your Child's Academic Skills, suggests effective ways for parents to be supportive in helping children with their homework. Presenting various topics using realistic scenarios and vignettes, each tape also comes with a summary pamphlet . . . Many parents are wringing their hands in frustration, wanting to help their children succeed but not knowing where to start. This series, available in either elementary or middle-school versions, would be a great place to begin. Highly recommended . . ."

- Video Librarian Magazine

"Experts agree that children benefit when parents participate in their education. This three-part program offers concrete suggestions to get moms and dads started. In the sampled video, Preparing Your Child to Succeed, parents are encouraged to recognize and understand their child's unique learning style, make sure that physical needs are met and provide daily routines and structure. In brief dramatizations, parents and children demonstrate wrong and right ways to meet these tasks as an expert calmly explains the differences. The remaining videos advise parents on how to encourage positive behavior and reinforce new academic skills. These low-key and reassuring programs promote positive parent involvement. A middle-school edition is also available."

Cooperative Parenting & Divorce MEDIA REVIEW

Family therapists Boyan and Termini have created an effective, sturdily constructed book-and-video set focused on managing, reducing and eliminating the conflict following a divorce. Parents are taught to keep conflict away from the kids. Thought the parent guide can be used alone and is more affordable than the set, this is a solid option for special collections supporting mental health professionals and self-help groups.

Cooperative Parenting & Divorce AWARD

Winner of a 2000 Parent's Guide to Children's Media (Parenting Division) Award!
Here's what the judges had to say:
"Divorce itself is tough on children, but constant, often bitter conflict that persists after the divorce makes it even tougher. Divorced or divorcing parents will find the workbook and video vignettes openly address likely areas of conflict and offer possible solutions that keep parents centered on what they can both agree on: the happiness and well-being of their child. Open communication and genuine respect, even amidst understandable differences, ground the conflict-resolving strategies. In the tradition of other Active Parenting series, the leader's guide is chockful of practical ideas to engage parents in the subject."

Connecting with Kids RESEARCH

The What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) selected Connect with Kids as an effective, results-oriented curriculum.

The 2004-2005 research study included more than 800 students across five diverse school districts at the elementary, middle and high school levels. The results reported by independent research firm, Compass Consulting, show that the Connect with Kids program improves student behavior in significant and important ways across multiple character skills, including teasing and bullying behaviors, cheating and lying, respect for classmates and teachers, violence prevention, and academic perseverance. The What Works Clearinghouse inclusion further validates these results and the program’s success. Click here for the WWC report.

The What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) was established in 2002 by the U.S. Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences to provide educators, policymakers, researchers, and the public with a central and trusted source of scientific evidence of what works in education. What Works Clearinghouse collects, screens, and identifies studies of the effectiveness of educational interventions. Source: whatworks.ed.gov.
