Q. How is Active Parenting: First Five
Years (FFY) an evidence-based parenting curriculum?
A. Even though FFY is a new program and the national field testing
is still underway, there are a number of ways that FFY currently
qualifies as an evidence-based program:
- It is the revision of the 1,2,3,4 Parents!
program that showed significant positive outcomes in a study
by Donna G Knauth, Ph.D., RNC, of Rutgers, The State University
of New Jersey College of Nursing: "The Effect of a Family-of-Origin
Genogram and Parenting Intervention on Adolescent Mothers' Level
of Differentiation of Self and Parenting Attitudes." (Click here for the abstract of that
- Like 1,2,3,4 Parents!, FFY is based
on the Active Parenting family of programs and uses the Active
Parenting model. There are over 20 studies showing evidence of
effectiveness for these programs and listings on NREPP and other
lists of evidence-based programs.
- Active Parenting author Dr. Michael Popkin
teamed with three experts in child development at Oklahoma State
University in developing FFY to make sure that the latest research
in child development and safety were included in the program.
Q. When do you expect that the curriculum
would be considered a fully evidence-based curriculum?
A. We are currently working with the same team of researchers
at Oklahoma State University (OSU) to conduct a nationwide research
study to provide ongoing evidence of effectiveness using the
most rigorous research methods. We expect to have the first wave
of results ready by spring 2019.
Q. How can our agency participate in the First Five Years national study?
A. Just fill out our online form at www.surveymonkey.com/r/FFY-ResearchInfo or call 1-800-825-0060 x2 to speak with one of our educational consultants. Once we ask a few questions about your FFY group, we will send you a Study Packet containing surveys and the other materials you will need to participate in the study.
Q. What are the requirements for participation?
A. All 4-session FFY groups are eligible to participate. You need your own Active Parenting: First Five Years Program Kit .and each parent will need a Parent’s Guide. The Study Packet we send you will provide everything else. To be eligible to receive incentives, you need to participate with a control group. See the next question for more information.
Q. What participation incentives are available and how do we earn them?
Participation incentives we’re offering to eligible groups include free parent’s guides and Active Parenting store credit for leaders and $40 Amazon.com gift cards for parents. To be eligible to receive incentives, you must also participate in the study’s control group. To do this, you would need to hold a 45-minute Orientation Session for parents 3-4 weeks before your First Five Years class begins and have them complete a pre-course survey. Give the survey again at the beginning of your first FFY course session and once more at the end of Session 4. Complete instructions are in your Study Packet, and a Study Consultant will be available to assist you.
