New studies
on parental influence
Two new studies funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse
(NIDA) show how parental factors influence an adolescents
decision to begin drug use. One surprising finding was that,
although family and peer factors had similar effects on males
and females, family monitoring and rules had a stronger protective
effect for males than females.
(For the complete report, go to www.health.org and request NIDA Notes, Vol. 18,
No. 2.)
Have you conducted evaluations of your
Active Parenting programs?
We know that there are many other quality organizations
such as the Business Training Institute who are offering Active
Parenting programs in their communities with great success. If
your organization has conducted independent evaluations, we encourage
you to share the results with us! Please send a copy of your
completed evaluations to Active Parenting's Product
Development Department. (Questions? Call Rachel Metzger at

Kudos for Active
Parenting Now
The Active
Parenting Now program and its components continue to receive
acclaim from experts in the field. Here are some of the most
recent:
Winner! National
Council on Family Relations Media Award - First Place in
Category 10: Parenting Issues (Active Parenting Now Video
Library Tape #3: Effective Discipline)
"...the information is current and relevant to today's families,
and will be a terrific help for parents from single, dual, blended,
or multi-generational families."
-Video Librarian magazine, January 2003
Finalist, 2003
Association for Educational Publishers Book of the Year
Winner,
2003 Aegis Award for excellence in video production
"In this helpful series, parents learn 'communication
and nonviolent discipline techniques' that aim to create positive
changes in family dynamics. In tape one, viewers are introduced
to various parenting styles and meet four culturally diverse
families (blended families, single-parent households, etc.) who
appear in vignettes throughout the series. A problem-handling
model to foster better communication is presented in session
two, while the third video discusses responsibility, discipline
and choices. Effective title screens, diagrams, and illustrations
illuminate the fourth episode, which helps parents understand
and redirect negative behavior. Segment five stresses character
building, courage, and self-esteem, while the final title highlights
family meetings. The importance of having fun with your child
is emphasized throughout these useful programs that often contrast
differing parenting styles in the dramatizations."
