Using Active Parenting for Staff Development: Dakota Boys Ranch

Christina Hemmer is training coordinator for the Dakota Boys Ranch in Fargo, North Dakota. This non-profit Christian organization works primarily with at-risk youth ages 12 to 17 and their families. Christina has found a creative way to put Active Parenting to work-she uses it for staff training:

"I teach Active Parenting Now to staff members who work directly with the youth in our care. As many of our staff are in their early twenties, very few have parenting experience. We have found the program does an excellent job teaching them skills that help them build relationships with our youth. I present the program to the staff by relating it to our jobs, but also point out how it is helpful to start learning good parenting skills before we even have children. The staff that have been through the course absolutely love it! As an organization we are working on offering the program to the parents of our residents in the future. It is not that easy to get the parents of the residents involved, so we are moving slowly."
