LEADER" On-line: Winter/Spring 1999

St. Louis Profits from Partnership
Active Parenting Publishers

The Family Support Council of St. Louis has found a valuable partner in Active Parenting Publishers. The two have joined forces under a new program called the Leader Training Workshop Partnership, and three partnership Leader Training Workshops (LTWs) are planned with the Family Support Council for the 1998-99 year. Not only are both groups enjoying the benefits, but so are Leaders in the St. Louis area, who have more training opportunities than ever before.

Providing training to people who work directly with families, the Family Support Council is a natural fit for parenting education training. "This is a win-win for us, and for Active Parenting, too" says Council representative (and LTW trainer) Andy Conover. The partnership works like this: the partner secures a meeting place with the necessary equipment (TV, VCR, overhead projector, screen, and flip chart) and helps with on-site logistical matters. Active Parenting handles pre-registration and all the other details. In return, the partner gets Active Parenting merchandise credit: $25 per LTW participant.

And what does Active Parenting get out of this? Conover notes that his organization has a network of parenting education contacts in the St. Louis area that a national organization like Active Parenting can’t tap into. By using the Family Support Council’s channels, Conover is able to spread the word about each LTW—and about Active Parenting—to a wider audience.

A longtime LTW trainer, Conover had been discussing the idea of a partnership with Active Parenting’s Training Director Susan Reed for quite a while. When the program officially began, "We were more than happy to be a part of it," he recalls. Organizations in more than 30 cities across the country—from Tacoma to Tampa—have also joined up.

Despite some problems with publicity, they were still able to draw 20 people into their October Leader Training Workshop (which was a combination of Active Parenting Today and Active Parenting of Teens training). "People are just hungry for the information," notes Conover. In February and June, supported by an early mailing of the schedule and publicity on Active Parenting’s new website, the Council hopes to welcome even more future Leaders to its workshops.
