Parents + Teens = Families in Action

There’s no denying it—parents and teens are often at odds...but it doesn’t have to be that way. When parents and teens learn together, they have common ground for conversation—and when they can talk together, problems get solved.

That’s why the new Families in Action for Teens & Parents program is so exciting. In development for over five years, Families in Action provides a unique approach to improving parent-teen interaction and strengthening our youth against the risks they face every day.

Families in Action is a video-based program with a dual purpose:

1. to teach parents the skills needed to guide their children through the challenging teen years
2. to help teens learn communication and negotiation techniques they can use at home, at school, and throughout their lives

Combining entertaining video, group discussion, and—for the teens—high-energy activities, the program will teach both groups how to:
• communicate effectively
• get along better
• avoid problems (including drugs, sex, violence and alcohol)

Families in Action is Two Programs in One!

The Families in Action program can be implemented in two ways:
• use both the Parent and Teen Kits to offer a program for parents and teens together
• use the Teen Kit alone for groups of preteens or teens (without parents present)

Both programs contain video from the Active Parenting of Teens program, a Parent Guide or a Teen Handbook, all-new Leader’s Guides, and other supplemental materials.

Two components = One flexible program

Families in Action: Parent Kit is designed for use with the Teen Kit. The materials in the parent program offer much of the information found in Active Parenting of Teens, but with teen interaction built in. While parents are learning valuable communication, discipline and encouragement principles, their teens are in the next room learning the same ideas! Parents and teens conclude each session together by participating in combined activities. (If you already own Active Parenting of Teens, you qualify for a specially-priced “upgrade.”)

Families in Action: Teen Kit can be used on its own or in conjunction with the Parent Kit. Teens will learn the same communication, self-respect and conflict-resolution skills that are taught in Active Parenting of Teens—but from a teen perspective.

The program also addresses the issues of school success, violence, alcohol, drugs, and sex. The Teen Kit is filled with entertaining activities that will not only keep teens’ attention but will also increase retention—and attendance!

Research proves it’s effective!

Long-term research on the Families in Action program (formerly called Families Meeting the Challenge) was recently published in the Journal of Drug Education and the Journal of Primary Prevention. Call for a copy.

"Analysis of covariance controlling for initial differences found several positive effects of program participation at the one-year follow-up. . . these findings suggest that providing parents and youth with similar communication skills can be an effective approach to substance abuse prevention."
