News from the Training Department

Greetings from Director of Training Susan Reed

Another busy training year has begun! In my 14 years of training parent educators, I've always been impressed by the excitement generated by a room full of people with a common purpose. Until recently, there has been no way to harness that energy after the workshop was over. That's why we were so pleased to find a way to keep leaders like you connected. The new Leaders Forum is e-mail based and free to join. Training Coordinator Dana McKie and I are both active participants in the forum. If you haven't yet joined, give Dana a call and she can fill you in. It's free and it's a wonderful way to learn from each other.

Of course you are always welcome to contact us with your questions, suggestions and stories. Just call 800-825-0060 x120 or send e-mail to training@activeparenting.com. Were here to support you!

Susan Reed, M.Ed.

Training of Trainers 2003 - Fun in the summer sun

In July and August, parenting education leaders from all over North America and as far away as Australia joined Dr. Michael Popkin and Director of Training Susan Reed for the Training of Trainers (ToT) seminars in Atlanta and Malibu (CA). Participants deepened their knowledge of the programs while learning how to train other parenting educators. Several agencies jump-started their parenting programs by sending several people to be trained: Forward in the Fifth, a community education group in Berea, KY; Washington School District of Phoenix, AZ; and a group from Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) working within the Quinault Indian Nation of Taholah, WA.

Each 3-day event featured a mixture of activities, discussion, practice and just plain fun. Next year's ToTs have been scheduled for July 15-17 in Atlanta and August 5-7 in southern California. Contact our Training Department to be placed on the mailing list for the ToT brochure when it is printed in the spring of 2004. (Just call 800-825-0060 or send e-mail.)

Many thanks to our training partners at Pepperdine University, who provided the facility for the ToT on their beautiful Malibu campus.

Special Leader Training Workshops

Along with our regularly-scheduled Leader Training Workshops (call us or see the web site for the latest list of dates & locations), Active Parenting can bring customized LTWs directly to your organization. Click here for an article about our biggest Special LTW this year120 Arkansas leaders trained in 3 days! Alabamas Jefferson County School System also hosted a big training session. Not all SLTWs are quite that big, though. You only need 12 for your own. Give Dana McKie a call at 800-825-0060 x120 for more information.

Thank you, partners!

As always we are very grateful to our Training Partners for their assistance in scheduling Leader Training Workshops. By providing a meeting room and other assistance, these partners helped bring more parenting education to their community while earning a $25 product credit for each attendee. This past year, the Family Life Council of Greater Greensboro (NC) holds the record for most LTW participants. Director Emilie Gottsegen says she includes the LTW dates in her newsletter, but mostly the program has great word of mouth in our county. She also notes that Greensboro's location in central North Carolina is advantageous: People come from all over to be trained here.
