When
Classes will be scheduled on an as-needed basis. Each class will continue for 6 weeks, one session per week. You will be able to log on and "lead" each session at times it is convenient to you during the week.

How students participate
Students will read a chapter in the Parent's Guide to prepare for each session. They will then go through the fun, interactive program online reading information, watching video scenes that illustrate examples from real-life situations, responding to questions, and participating in online discussions with you and other parents. Online groups will be limited to 20 participants.

What you as a leader will do
Each week, leaders will be expected to monitor the online discussions as well as lead live, 1-hour online chats each week. You will help guide their discussions, answer questions, and provide general feedback to supplement each session's materials and enhance the learning experience for each student. You'll also be expected to provide periodic one-on-one feedback to each participant.
Completing these leader activities will take 3-4 hours a week to start. As you become more familiar with the program and answering questions online, your time required will probably lessen. (If you are a slow typist, this will add to your time online.)

What's in it for me?
Most importantly, you will be reaching parents you might not be able to reach through traditional means. Many parents are unable to attend parenting groups because of work schedules, child care issues, or transportation problems. By leading an online parenting workshop, you'll be helping parents learn proven Active Parenting skills in the comfort of their own homes from the comfort of your own home!

Leaders will also receive payment for successfully leading each online group: $10 per participant who Active Parenting places in your group, and $15 per participant who you recruit! (See "How Can I Recruit My Own Groups?" below for details.)

What are the requirements?
First, you need to have the desire to help families. Next, you should be Internet-savvy. This means that you are comfortable and self-sufficient navigating the Internet. Experience participating in online bulletin boards or "listservs" would be especially helpful. Since all communication with the parents is done online, you should be very good at expressing your ideas clearly in writing. Good spelling and grammar are also important.

Having experience leading "live" Active Parenting Today workshops is a plus, but not a requirement.

You must participate in a "Leaders-in-Training Online Group" with other potential online leaders, to experience the materials and interactive aspects of the course from a parent's point of view. (The cost of the course is $59.95. See "How to Be Certified" below for more details.)

The computer you use to lead the online groups should have the following:

  • 486 66MHz compatible processor or better (PC)
  • 680x0 processor w/ Color QuickDraw support w/ at least 8MB or RAM or power
  • PC w/ 16 MB of RAM (Mac)
  • Windows 3.x or later (PC)
  • Mac OS 7.1 or later (Mac)
  • 4x CD-ROM drive
  • Sound card with speakers (PC)
  • 14.4Kbps dial-up Internet connection or better
  • Netscape 2.0 or later, Internet Explorer 4.0 or later, America Online 3.0 or later
  • QuickTime (can be downloaded free from the Web)

A note about firewalls:
Some firewalls (devices used by many private organizations for extra security, such as access from a hospital or other information-sensitive organization) will cause certain aspects the software used for the course to be inaccessible. If you access the Internet from behind a firewall, it is best to check with your network administrator about compatibility. The live chat requires access to Port 6667.

How to be certified as an online leader
To ensure a valuable learning experience for parents who sign up for the online course, we will require leaders to be certified before contracting with you to lead a class. The process is simple:

 1.
   Complete an application.
(Read on!)
 2.
Participate in a Leaders-in-Training Online Group.
If approved, we will schedule you into an online group so you can experience the course from the perspective of a student, as well as have an opportunity to become familiar with both the course content and how to navigate the site. The cost of the course is $59.95.

This group will be made up exclusively of other leaders in training. This is so your online discussions can reflect the concerns and questions that will be specific to your needs as a leader.
 3.

Complete content evaluation and writing sample.
Our goal is to provide parents signing up for the online course with a rich learning opportunity. We will require confirmation that our leaders have a thorough understanding of Active Parenting principles.

In addition to a general Active Parenting Today content evaluation, we will also require a sample of your writing. We will want to be sure that online leaders are well equipped to be effective leaders in an online setting (which is quite different from the traditional "live" learning situations to which most of us are accustomed). Since certified online leaders will be representing Active Parenting through written communication, spelling and grammar skills will also be considered.

For the writing sample you will be asked to answer questions from imaginary parents how would you answer these questions as an online leader?

Note: Active Parenting Training of Trainers graduates are required to complete only the writing sample.

  4.
Lead a trial APT Online Group.
The evaluations and writing samples will be reviewed by our Training Director. Upon successful completion of the evaluation, you'll be invited to lead your first APT Online Group. We will monitor your first class to assess your online leadership skills. We will also work with you during the course and provide feedback and pointers to help you. (You will be paid according to the normal payment policy for leading this group.)
 5.
Submit $15 certification fee, if approved.
At the end of the trial course, our Training Director will evaluate your performance and provide you with feedback. If requirements have been successfully met, you will be invited to submit a $15 certification fee to receive your Online Leader's Kit. You will then be certified to lead Active Parenting Today Online Groups!

Materials you will receive
You will receive the parents' program materials when you participate in an online group as part of the certification process. This includes:

  • Participation in the 6-week online group, guided by a certified Active Parenting Online Leader
  • The opportunity to interact online with other leaders in training
  • One Active Parenting Today Parent's Guide (164 pages)
  • 3 CD-ROMs containing the video (159 minutes) and course materials. You can use these materials as review even after the online course is complete!
  • User Name and Password for accessing the program
  • Written instructions for participating and suggestions for getting the maximum benefit from the group.

The Online Leader's Kit will be sent to you after you are certified by Active Parenting as an Online Leader. The kit includes:

  • One Active Parenting Today Online Leader's Guide (16 pages)
  • Promotional materials
  • Master participant application

How can I recruit my own groups?
As an online leader, you can choose to let Active Parenting assign participants for your group, or you can recruit your own parents! For each Active Parenting recruit you will receive $10, and for each of your own recruits you be paid $15.

Your Online Leader kit will include materials to help you market a workshop, including reproducible fliers, sample e-mail text, and a master participant's application. You will collect the course fees from your participants, and send us the balance due. You then submit the applications to your Active Parenting training coordinator, who will schedule a workshop for you. We will notify your group members of the timeframe and provide access information. You will have the option of distributing the materials yourself or having Active Parenting ship materials to each participant.

The maximum number of participants per workshop is 20.
