Active Parenting of Teens

by Michael H. Popkin, Ph.D.

Introducing comprehensive new parenting classes for parents of teens and 'tweens!

Active Parenting of Teens has been one of our most popular parenting classes since its introduction. The basic psychology underlying the program—open communication, nonviolent discipline, mutual respect—remains timeless, but now we have revised the content to address our complicated day and age. The resulting new program will give parents the confidence and courage to meet the challenges (and savor the joys) of parenting teenagers.

Not just for parents of teens
Kids today seem to mature earlier than ever, and class leaders have found that Active Parenting of Teens is welcomed by parents of "'tweens"—children in middle school and even younger. Dr. Popkin kept that in mind as he rewrote the program, and you'll find it full of advice to calm parents' fears as their children grow into independent adults.

What's new about revised Teens?

  • all-new video filmed in 2008
  • flexible structure: your parenting classes can be 2, 3, 4, or 6 sessions (see below)
  • topics rearranged for maximum effect in minimum time
  • all-new Parent's Guide and Leader's Guide
  • contemporary new look to attract parents' attention

The revised program for parenting teenagers includes the essential Active Parenting model that has benefited millions of parents, plus:

  • teens and technology (social networking sites, the Internet, etc.)
  • improved discipline and communication
  • the latest in teen drug use prevention (including prescription drugs)
  • updated teen sexuality issues
  • special stepfamily considerations
  • teen depression and suicide
  • updated gang & violence prevention
  • how brain development affects teen behavior and decision-making

Flexible structure gives you the freedom to customize your parenting classes
With so many different kinds of parents, why should there be only one kind of class? The revised Active Parenting of Teens program was designed to make it easy for you to offer

  • a 3-session class for basic Active Parenting skills (with a teenage twist)
  • a 4-session class for basics + in-depth skills practice
  • a 2-session unit focusing on alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs (ATOD) prevention
  • or a comprehensive 6-session course giving participants a full toolbox for parenting teenagers

It's not all new!
Some things never go out of style. With the revised Active Parenting of Teens, you will be able to offer classes in which parents are able to learn and laugh in a supportive environment. As before, each class features many video vignettes illustrating key points in a humorous, relatable manner. All sessions include time for discussion and activities--important for helping participants learn from each other. Our parenting classes end with a "homework" assignment and begin with Share & Tell.

All you need in one easy-carry kit
Your revised Active Parenting of Teens program kit contains 2 DVDs (approximately 150 minutes total), a step-by-step Leader's Guide, a sample Parent's Guide, a sample completion certificate, 2 large color posters and a color flyer. And here's some more good news: you can preview your kit for 30 days free of charge. If you decide it's not for you, just return within 30 days of the order. We're excited about this revision and know you'll be able to use it to make parenting teenagers easier.
